There has been significant media coverage regarding weight loss injections (Mounjaro/Wegovy). We are aware that NHS England have recently advised that GP’s can start to prescribe them to patients, however we are unfortunately unable to prescribe these medications yet. We are currently waiting for further guidance about this from our local governing body. This is the same for GP practices across the city. The local policies can sometimes take time to implement to ensure we are prescribing the medication safely and reviewing patients regularly to ensure their weight loss is well supported and safe.
Whilst we are waiting for this new local guidance, we need to continue to follow our normal referral pathways which are already in place for weight management. You may be eligible for health coaching or an exercise program before being eligible for the injections.
Currently the eligibility criteria to potentially start injections is having a BMI of 40kg/m2 or higher or a BMI of 35kg/m2 with one health related problem. The health-related problems include:
- Diabetes (Type 1 or 2)
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease
- Previous stroke or TIA
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Fatty liver disease
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
- Established Anxiety and/or Depression for at least 6 months and on treatment or engaged with psychological therapies.
If you would like a referral to our weight management services and think you meet the eligibility criteria, then please book an initial appointment with a social prescriber to explore your options. They can ask a GP to review and refer if needed. You can book an appointment by contacting reception.
